Introduced by the Tamil film-maker T. Rajendar in Mythili Yennai Kadali (Tamil), Amala reached meteoric heights and ruled the South Indian film industry from the late 1980s to the early 1990s until her marriage to Telugu superstar Nagarjuna in 1992. They met on the sets of the Telugu film Shiva (1990) and married soon after. The couple have one son, Akhil. After her marriage, the graceful and delectable Amala retired from films to take up the cause of animals. She set up the Blue Cross of Hyderabad with her husband's support and is involved actively in the field of animal welfare.

Recently, Amala was in Chennai to take part in an exhibition to promote awareness of preserving wild life. In a rare interaction with the press, the animal lover stated, "Every child should be educated to show love and warmth towards animals."


Denying rumours that she plans to get into direction with a movie on wild life, she claimed, "Certainly not. When so many movies are made inflicting cruelty on animals by directors in various languages, I don't want to join the list. There are other ways and means of promoting awareness."

Amala also urged politicians and law-makers to ensure that action is taken to preserve the environment and keep it green and clean.
