Vamsam – Movie Review

Vamsam is the launch pad of debutant Arulnidhi, grand son of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. It is the second film of director Pandiraj, after his impressive debut in Pasanga. This time Pandiraj has turned to age old village sentiment and bloodshed story.

Story:
Pulivathanam and Singampidari are neighboring villages where the Devar Community has the stronghold. Every year they perform fortnight-long annual festival at the local temple which is controlled by the village chief Seenikannu (Jayaprakash), a cunning man. Anbarasu (Arulnidhi) lives in the village with his widowed mother (Anupama), a local school teacher. He has been brought up strictly by his mother and he is a model citizen, and prefers to be a farmer.

One day he meets Malar (Sunaina), a bubbly and funny girl from the neighboring village, where her father is the village chief. They fall in love. But Seenikannu Devar, father of Malar, opposes their marriage as he had Enmity against Anba's father Rathinam (Kishore). The big twist in the story takes place when Seenikannu is humiliated by Malar in front of the villagers.

Performances:
The first half of the film is really good and Pandiraj's comedy steals the heart. Particularly the romance between Arulnidhi and Sunaina works out well. The way a cow called Asin acts as cupid between hero and heroine is hilarious and really a novel effort.

Arulnidhi is impressive and impressive at parts. But he has to improvise his body language and style of dialogue delivery.Sunaina's impeccable and flawless performance touch the hearts of viewers. Her mischievous but realistic acting is major plus for this film. Jayaprakash has given new dimension to his role and Kishore coming in the flashback scenes is fantastic.

Taj Noor"s music is not having enough pep and the songs slacken the pace. Mahesh Muthuswami"s camera and Devarajan's art works bring the village scenes and Thiruvizha alive. The climax is easily predictable but for Pandiraj's excellent comedy and realistic screenplay forces one to watch the movie till the end.

Verdict: Watchable
