The second quarter in the current year has come to an end on June 30. It is now the time to analyse the half yearly report of Kollywood in 2014. Audience have witnessed a record number of film releases in the first six months but only countable movies have impressed them.

First Quarter Report
Vijay's Jilla and Ajith Kumar's Veeram released in the month of January with mammoth expectations. The releases of the two big stars films for Sankranthi brought a festive atmosphere in the industry as fans thronged into theatres in huge numbers. It was followed by sleeper-hit Golisoda, which emerged as a big winner as it was not made with a star cast. In the month, 18 movies were released.

February was a bad month for the industry. Most films failed to pull audience to theatres. Only Thegidi won the audience heart. Expected movies like Aaha Kalyanam and Bramman did not live up to audience expectations. And in March a few small-movies did well at Box Office. Much-awaited Jayam Ravi's Nimirndhu Nil disappeared from screens without a trace.

All in all, 54 movies were released in the first half and only four movies recovered production cost.

The Second Quarter

Industry was expecting to perform better in the second quarter. As the exam season has come to an end, filmmakers hoped that April would be a good month for the business in Kollywood. Maan Karate was released in the first week with huge expectations. But once again, the big movie failed to keep the cash registers ringing. However, it was low-budget movie, Raju Murgan's Cuckoo that became the biggest hit of the month.

Failed Movies

Most expected films like Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavaanikalum, Naan Sigappu Manithan, Damaal Dumeel, Tenaliraman and Vaayai Moodi Pesavum also failed to impress audience in the month of April.

May

Rajinikanth's Kochadaiiyaan was the biggest release in May. Hence, many big and low-budget movies delayed the releases. The superstar's movie got mixed reviews and could not make the usual business that a Rajini film does at Box Office. Nayantara's Nee Enge En Anbe and Santhanam's Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham turned out to be big failures at collection centres in the month. However, young team's Yaamirukka Bayamey won the hearts of audience.

Manja Pai-Mundaasupatti

Manja Pai and Mundaasupatti emerged as the biggest winners in June, The former received positive reviews but the latter got poor ratings from critics.

Conclusion

The first six months in the year has been ruled by low-budget movies. The most-expected films have turned out to be dud at Box Office. Only 10 films out of 100+ are in profits. However, when compared with the previous year, the performance of the current year films are better. In 2013, close to 90 movies were released in the first half of which only five films became hits.
