The who's who of Tamil film industry are participating in a day-long fast on Tuesday (April 2). The strike is against the reported genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka. The entire film industry is expressing its solidarity for the cause.

Ajith Kumar came early to the venue. Rajinikanth, Sarath Kumar, Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Arjun Sarja, Karthi Sivakumar, Surya, Manobala, Satjyaraj, Dhanush and many others joined the hunger strike. Actor Vijay was missing in the occasion as the actor is in Australia filming his next movie Thalaivaa directed by director Vijay.

For the second time within two weeks, the Tamil film industry has joined hands to observe a day-long fast. While the Tamil Nadu Film Directors Association (TANTIS) and Film Employees' Federation of South India (FEFSI) spearheaded the earlier fast, the Nadigar Sangam, also known as South Indian Film Artistes' Association (SIFAA), called the strike in support of Sri Lankan Tamils. As everybody from the industry couldn't participate because of tight schedules in the earlier fast, the SIFAA called for the bandh today.

However, there were no mikes and no speeches. "One of the reasons we are not using microphone is that we don't want tempers to flare. If given an opportunity, people will vent and unnecessarily create tension," a member of SIFAA told IANS.

The actors, directors and technicians of Kollywood are staging a day-long hunger strike to protest against the atrocities done on Tamils in Sri Lanka.

The film fraternity is staging its protests at T-Nagar in Chennai. Television news channels reported that a make-shift place had been arranged to accommodate the artists who were staging the fast.

The entire film related activities have come to a standstill as artists, directors, producers, distributors and exhibitors are participating in the hunger-strike.

Ajith Kumar was supposed to start shooting for his new Tamil film Tuesday, but he postponed the same to participate in the fast.

All theatres in the city will remain shut during the course of the hunger strike. The fast will conclude at 6 p.m.

Sarath Kumar, who is leading the protest, demanded the Centre to implement the resolution adopted by the Tamil Nadu Assembly recently, demanding a referendum on separate Tamil Eelam and action against those who committed war crimes. The protesters were likely to pass few resolutions later in the day on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.
