The film has won him Best Director title at 56th National Awards while Moorthy wins Best Make-up award for the same film.Gowtham Menon"s Vaaranam Aayiram has won Best Popular Tamil Movie awards while Dibakar Banerjee"s Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye wins the title for Best Popular Hindi Film.

Director Bala"s Naan Kadavul revolves around the raw-n-realistic delineation of a youngster (Aarya), who becomes hermit after being forsaken by his own father at Kasi. After when many years, his father takes him back to hometown and what unfolds next is wild hermit"s clash with the dons torturing physically disabled ones to beg and fetch money. Gowtham Menon"s Vaaranam Aayiram is loosely based on Tom Hanks" Forrest Gump where the story revolves around father-son relationship (both roles enacted by Surya).
