After 17 long years, Balu Mahendra, one of the veterans in the Tamil Film Industry has revealed that he was one of the reasons for the flying start of 'Oscar hero' Rahman's career in the early stages.

At an audio launch on Monday Balu Mahendra told the untold story of how Rahman had won his first national award.

Balu Mahendra said that it was his casting vote as the jury chairman of the National Award committee, that fetched Rahman the award for the best music director for Roja over Ilayaraja's Thevar Magan in the same year!

Interestingly, Balu Mahendra had never worked with Rahman in his career. In all his 25 films the scores were produced and composed by Ilayaraja alone.

Rahman would be in Chennai on Saturday night and will attend the Cine Musicians" Union special felicitation function for winning the coveted Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe awards.

Roja music might have been different, but the composer-maestro's devar magan composition and back-ground score was way ahead of roja. No doubt. Perhaps the jury would have liked to have a new, young person to achieve the award. Subjectivity creeping into even national awards is not an encouraging thing.

Practically speaking it matters when anyone gives you chance or opportunity or vote but no one except destiny can stop a talented person from acheiving heights.
