UNESCO honours Girish Karnad

Girish Karnad, one of the veterans of Indian Theater, and cinema has been honoured with the ambassadorship of UNESCO's International Theatre Institute.

Karnad nearing 70, has composed many plays which won international awards and good critics' reviews. Many of his plays have been translated into several foreign languages in the past 40 years.

He has been honoured with Sangeet Natak Akademy award in 1972, Padmashri in 1974 and Padma Bhushan in 1992 and Jnanpith Award in 1998.

Girish has also appeared in several Tamil films including the popular commercial flick Kadhalan directed by Shankar.

International Theater Institute, the Paris based organization has honoured about a dozen other personalities including British theatre and film director Peter Brook, Italian playwright Dario Fo, French theatrical legend Ariane Mnouchkine and German choreographer Pina Bausch.
