Many celebrities would do anything for publicity, especially when their films or albums are up for release. Controversy-prone singer Lady Gaga too seems to have resorted to cheap publicity to boost up the sales of her new album, 'Born This Way'. The Catholic community is upset with the video of her song “Judas", and releasing the same on Easter Sunday would be like adding salt to the wounds.
In the Bible, Judas is one of the twelve apostles who betrayed Jesus and Mary Magdalene is the first person who sees Jesus after his death. The video, which has Lady Gaga as Mary Magdalene and Norman Reedus as Judas, portrays Mary Magdalene as a prostitute. This has not gone down too well with the Christian community and some even call it 'blasphemous" antics.
Bill Donohue, president of the 'Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights', told HollywoodLife.com, “This is a stunt. People have real talent, and then there is Lady Gaga," adding, “Lady Gaga tries to continue to shock Catholics and Christians in general: she dresses as a nun, she gets raped, she swallows the rosary. She has now morphed into a caricature of herself. She is falling short. She wants to shock, does she actually believe her own BS?"
Bill alleged that the singer is trying to spoil Christian beliefs to boost her career. “I find Gaga to be increasingly irrelevant. She thinks she is going to be groundbreaking. She is trying to rip-off Christian idolatry to shore up her talentless, mundane and boring performances. Another ex-Catholic whose head is turned around. This is a stunt. People have real talent, and then there is Lady Gaga. Is this the only way to jet up her performance? This isn"t random, we are getting closer to Holy Week and Easter," he said adding, “Maybe if she had more talent we"d be more offended. She has gone to the well too many times."
