During the release of the song in 1997, it was subjected to criticism from several quarters, especially the Feminists. BBC and MTV had also banned the uncensored version of the song. The music video of 'Smack My Bitch Up' explicitly showed illegal acts like usage of drugs, drink driving, sex and violence. The lyrics of this song were sampled from Ultramagnetic MC"s track, 'Give The Drummer Some'.
