Mehdi Hassan dies of multiple organ failure

Ghazal singer Mehdi Hassan, who is known for his songs like 'Patta patta, boota boota' and 'Kab ke Bichhare', died at the Agha Khan Hospital in the southern port city of Karachi today. The 84-year-old Ghazal legend was suffering from multiple organ failure. His son Arif Hassan has confirmed the news about his death.

Mehdi Hassan had multiple lung, chest and urinary tract ailments. He had been ill for the last 12 years, but this year his condition had deteriorated significantly. He was recently admitted in the ICU of Agha Khan hospital for last one week, but he is not on a ventilator. Talking to PTI, Arif Hassan said, "My father passed away at 12:22 PM after a long battle against different ailments."

The Kab ke Bichhare singer was born into a family of traditional musicians at Luna village in Rajasthan, India in 1927. His father Ustad Azeem Khan and uncle Ustad Ismail Khan who were both traditional Dhrupad singers, were his first music gurus. He started to perform at a young age.

Mehdi Hassan's first concert of Dhrupad and Kheyal with his elder brother was said to have been held in Fazilka Bungla in 1935. His family migrated to Pakistan at the time of Partition in 1947. Despite the hardships, his passion for music didn't wither and he kept up the routine of practice on a daily basis.

Mehdi Hassan had records of as many as 25 Ghazal collections and received several national and international awards. He cut back on his performances in the late 1980s due to illness. However, the news about his sudden demise has shocked his fans across the globe. Hundreds of his fans gathered at the hospital on learning of his death.
