Parthan Kanda Paralokam - Review

Parthan Kanda Paralokam
After Akku Akbar's Veruthe Oru Bharya, one of the brilliant mainstream crowd-pleasers in recent times, everything indicated that Jayaram has finally got a much-needed pep in his acting career after nearly five years. But sadly, Jayaram could not succeed this time, as his latest Ramzan release Parthan Kanda Paralokam suffers severely due to poor scripting, characterization and direction.

In Parthan Kanda Paralokam, directed by Anil, Jayaram plays Parthasarathy, popularly called Parthan, who lives in Krishnapuram village. Parthan is constantly clashing with his uncle Falgunan Thampy (Jagathy Sreekumar), who is the Panchayath President. Falgunan is least bothered about the welfare of the people; rather, he is more keen in grabbing the assets of the village temple, which has been locked for many years by the court over a dispute of ownership. Falgunan, also the secretary of temple's ruling committee, believes that the temple belongs to his family, while Parthan and his friends like Suleiman and Poonkodi argue that the temple belongs to the village.

Into this situation comes Falgunan's daughter Sathyabhama (Sreedevika), an advocate, who pretends to be in love with Parthan. In fact, her intention is to help her father on the temple dispute in the court. As a result, Parthan, who begins an agitatation, is sentenced to one month's imprisonment for contempt of court.

After Parthan is released from jail, the film takes an interesting turn. Parthan dies after consuming spurious liquor in Guruvayoor, but miraculously returns to life. After this near-death experience, Lord Krishna is present to help him in the form of Madhavan (Mukesh), pretending to be his college friend and both start fighting Parthan's uncle. How Madhavan helps Parthan to clear all the problems of his life forms the rest of the movie.

Director Anil, who earlier made films like Pattabhishekam, Uttaman and Njaan Salpperu Ramankutty, has nothing new to offer in this film with a weak script by Rajan Kiriyath. Although the basic plot is promising, it fails to reach anywhere.

Jayaram's role as Parthan is neither bad nor good. Jagathy Sreekumar as Falgunan and Mukesh as Madhav are convincing, while Sreedevika as Sathyabhama is OK. Kalabhavan Mani does not impress us in his not-so-significant role as villain in the last few minutes of the film. There is nothing much to mention about the technical aspects. Anandakuttan's cinematography is OK. All in all, Parthan Kanda Paralokam fails to impress or entertain.

Cast Jayaram, Mukesh, Sreedevika, Jagathy Sreekumar, Kalabhavan Mani
Director Anil
Script Rajan Kiriyath
Story K.B. Raju
Music M. Jaychandran

Veruthe Oru Bharya - Review

Veruthe Oru Bharya is one of the best films of recent times, narrated with intensity and integrity from beginning to end. We have seen quite a few preachy films on matrimonial harmony in the past; director Akku Akbar's Veruthe Oru Bharya, starring Jayaram and Gopika, is one among them, with the message that a wife is not the bonded labour of her husband. Let's think about a lady waking up early in the morning at 5:00 a.m., getting into the drudgery.....

Veruthe Oru Bharya:Paean to Womanhood

Veruthe Oru Bharya echoes the spirit of the age with deep and pertinent tones signalling the emancipation of the woman in her household. The movie has vindicated the woman's stand to be heard and considered as an individual in her own right. With Gopika and Jayaram in the lead, and the backdrop of a middle class family in Kerala, the movie does justice to those women of the society who silently bear the burden of running the family in their own.....
