Playback singer Dr. KJ Yesudas' cochlear implant project for hearing impaired children from poor families will be implemented within two weeks by the Kerala Government. The project will give hearing ability to a number of children especially those below three years. The cochlear implant surgery is an effective remedy for cent percent deaf children.
In a meeting convened at Thiruvananthapuram to discuss the programme, Chief Minister Ommen Chandy congratulated KJ Yesudas for pointing out such a scheme to his Government. Yesudas said that some of the privileges that his grand daughter gets should be shared with some hapless children too.
A fifteen member committee will be constituted and will be entrusted to prepare details regarding the implementation of the scheme. They will submit the report within two weeks. Six doctors, four Government representatives and a representative from Social Security Mission, Benny Behanan MLA and three Ethnic Committee members will form the committee.
Ommen Chandy said, “All the Medical Colleges and District Hospitals will be equipped with Audio Testing Devices." Meanwhile, Social Welfare Minister MK Muneer pointed out, “Only one out of thousand children need Cochlear Implantation Surgery. If the treatment is successful in children above three years of age, they will also be considered."
However, Ministers Adoor Prakash, KM Mani, Benny Behanan MLA and other officials were also present in the meeting.
