Sharbani Mukherjee with Mammootty

Bollywood actress Sharbani Mukherjee, daughter of Romu Mukherjee and cousin of Hindi actresses Rani Mukherjee, Kajol and Tanisha, has been roped in to star in forthcoming Sufi Paranja Katha (What the Sufi said), the third venture of director Priyanandanan, who was honoured with the best feature film award for his second venture Pulijanmam at the recent National Film Awards. Sharbani Mukherjee earlier appeared in Rakilipattu (2000).

An adaptation of famous Malayalam writer K.P. Ramanunni's first novel with the same title (which won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award and Edasseri award), Sufi Paranja Katha is the fascinating story of the subtle relationships existing between Hindu and Muslim families in Northern Kerala in the early nineteenth century. The plot develops around the marriage between Mammootty, a Muslim, and Karthy, a Hindu.

Karthy (Sharbani Mukherjee) hails from a Nair family and converts to Islam after marriage. But she is still unable to resist the customs and longings of her original religion. The message of Sufi Paranja Katha is that no one is free from his or her cultural heritage of generations, irrespective of the religion that one chooses in adulthood.

The film has already started shooting in Ottappalam, Palakkad. Other cast members include Babu Antony, Innocent, Jagathy, Mullanezhi, Thambi Antony, Indrans, Mala Aravindan, Vineeth Kumar, Manikandan, Samvritha and Sona Nair. Script and dialogues are handled by the novelist himself, while camera is by Hari Nair. Produced by Kayal Films in association with US-based Silicon Media, the movie is expected to be released by Vishu 2009.
