“Malayalam cinema will never win an Oscar”

"Malayalam cinema will never win an Oscar award. A movie running for Oscars should have a minimum of 15-day screening at New York and Los Angeles counties. Moreover, a foreigner judging the movie should understand Malayalam. If we"re delivering the dialogues in English, he should also be able to understand our English," remarked superstar Mammootty.

Malayalam superstar Mammootty spoke these words during his address at the mammoth reception accorded to Oscar award winner Resul Pookutty by Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce at Durbar Hall Hall Ground in Kochi on Wednesday. However, Mammootty pointed out that the industry can win laurels if it is able to step up both the creative and technological values of film-making.

Malayalam movies do have an appeal that goes beyond just Kerala or Malayalees. Malayalam movies are family movies which reflect our day to day life. I have had many Non-malayalee friends who do watch Malayalam movies. They claim that it is the only movie that they can watch along with their parents and children. No awkward/embarassing moments with a song-dance sequence like Tamil/Kannada/Telugu or other Indian language movies. Maybe we should make a Malayalam movie with a global audience in mind. If Passion of the Christ, Titanic or even Slumdog can make it with the International audience, then a well produced Malayalam movie should be able to do it.

This is the typical traditional keralite mindset. They start by teaching the young ones about kochu keralam and start building an inferiority complex from day one. Any wonder why majority of keralites who go outside kerala spit back at their home state. Mr.. mammootty if you make a good movie even the americans will appreciate it. But then they have to be well made and marketed well unlike the typical mallu movies. I heard that the kids of one malayalam superstar cannot speak malayalam and hate anything to do with kerala. good going super stars..
