Aakashagopuram: Malayalam's first international film

It is a common practice in Indian films to involve a foreign cameraman or a foreign makeup artist or stuntman to label the film as "international collaboration". Mohanlal starrer Aakashagopuram is a good example, it brings together the best of talents from Hollywood, UK, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam film industries.

Shot entirely in various locations in the UK by cinematographer Santosh C. Thundiyil of Krrish, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Pinjar and Kaal, Aakashagopuram is the film adaptation of Henrik Ibsen"s classic play 'The Master Builder', which was first performed in Berlin on January 19, 1893. This first international movie in Malayalam is directed by National award winning director K.P. Kumaran. It stars Mohanlal, Bharat Gopi, Sreenivasan, Swetha Menon, Manoj K. Jayan, Geethu Mohandas and Nithya.

The music has been scored by BAFTA (The British Academy of Film and Television Arts) and Emmy Award-winning British soundtrack composer John Altman (who set music for Golden Eye, Titanic, Bhaji On The Beach and Shall We Dance). The sound design has been done by Nigel Holland of Batman Begins, Braveheart and Resident Evil.

Rerecording mixers are Robert Farr (Star Wars: Episode II&III and Gangs Of New York) and Matthew Gough (Harry Potter Prisoner Of Azkaban and Cold Mountain). The visual effects have been done by John Harvey and Jonathan Trussler of Kingdom of Heaven.

Aakashagopuram will be released nationwide on August 22, 2008. Produced by Manu S. Kumaran, the film is released by Medient Corporation PLC, a multinational film production company run by a team of globally-renowned producers with a combined credit list of over 200 feature films. Medient operates in all key film markets across the globe.

Akashagopuram to go abroad

It seems that Malayalam cinema is following the path of Bollywood and Kollywood films by releasing in foreign markets. Akashagopuram, which is the highest-budgeted Malayalam movie so far, will be releasing in select foreign cities. Apparently, the producers believe that it is important to tap the foreign markets to recoup the investment made. The producers have entered into various tie-ups to release the film in the US and Europe. Meanwhile, the film, which was released in Kerala on 22nd August,.....

When he died in a private hospital at Thiruvananthapuram on January 29 due to a massive heart attack, his part in Balachandra Menon's De Ingottu Nokkiye was not even half-complete. Technically, De Ingottu Nokkiye is his last film in a career spanning nearly three decades; however, K.P. Kumaran's yet to be released Aakashagopuram calls special attention as his final venture. In Aakashagopuram, an.....
