It is the belief of the Catholic Church that the sacraments are an outward sign of an inward GRACE. The sacraments of “Eucharist, Reconciliation (Confession) and Priesthood” have a very special place among sacraments. It demands an unlimited “ACCEPTANCE IN FAITH. For a believer sacraments are ‘Source of Faith’ to live the Christian Way of Life. Unfortunately these SACRAMENTS are very badly pictured and presented in the Malayalam movie called “ROMANS”. Indirectly the movie mocks at the very nature and purpose of the “Sacraments of Eucharist, Reconciliation (Confession) and Priesthood”. Whatever may be the justification it is a very much hurting for a practicing catholic because it creates a very negative impression of the Sacraments which are mentioned above. Moreover, it gives a negative picture about the Sacrament of Confession: its very nature of the secrecy, minister, the penitent and the content as well. Very openly this SACRAMENT is misinterpreted in the movie. What is the Catholic Priesthood? It is first of all a divinely instituted Sacrament that Christ Himself instituted at the Last Supper. The Catholic priesthood is a state of life and therefore it requires a special divine vocation. The priesthood, therefore, is not an occupation, not a job, not an employment and not even a profession. It is the most sublime vocation to which God can call man and those who respond are ordained and remain priests forever: no matter what may happen to their mind or body or even their souls. A priest is the “Minister of Christ” – an instrument in the hands of the “Redeemer” in administering sacraments. He continues the work of redemption. For in some way he is the continuation of Christ. Thus the priest is with good reason “Another Christ”. This very notion of “Priesthood” is mocked in the movie and its sanctity is simply disfigured. . The Eucharist is the very sacrifice of the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus which the Lord Jesus instituted to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the ages until his return in glory. Thus he entrusted to His Church this memorial of His death and Resurrection. It is a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet in which Christ is consumed, and a pledge of future glory is given to us. In this Sacrament the “Priest and the Victim” are the same; only the manner of offering is different: in a bloody manner on the cross, in an unbloody manner in the Eucharist. The Eucharist is a pledge of future glory because it fills us with every grace and heavenly blessing. It fortifies us for our pilgrimage in this life and makes us long for eternal life. Reconciling of Man to God is the Purpose of Confession. Thus, in reconciling us to God, it is a great source of grace and Catholics are encouraged to take advantage of it as often as possible. It is one of the least understood and misinterpreted among all the Sacraments of the Catholic Church by nonbelievers as in the movie “ROMANS”. In confession, the outward sign is the Absolution or the forgiveness of sins that the priest grants to the penitent (the person confessing his sins) and the inward grace is the Reconciliation of the Penitent to God. The only way out of this downward cycle is to acknowledge one’s limitations and failures in the light of faith in Jesus and in His Church and to ask God’s forgiveness and His grace. Therefore, in the Sacrament of Confession the grace can be restored to our souls and we can once again resist sinful nature and situations.
