Super (Hand Symbol) - movie review

Friday, December 3, 2010, 17:23 [IST]
Yesterday, in an interview with an FM Radio channel, Upendra said that he was confused with the term different cinema. But knowingly or unknowingly director Uppi has made the movie Super that is named after hand symbol completely a different film and that different trick starts right from the displaying title cards, which has never been attempted by anyone in Indian cinema. Super is really superb.

Super is a futuristic movie, which goes forward to 2030 and depicts how Karnataka will be at that point of time. The main highlight of the film is Upendra's wonderful performance. V Harikrishna's rocking music, Jonny Lal and Ashok Kashyap's beautiful picturisation, Sadhu and Ali's comedy, Uppi's screenplay and punch dialogues, choreography of songs and fights are other plus points of the film.

The movie depicts the corrupt political system that has landed the people of Indian at a coma stage. Specially, it is a sharp satire on the current political drama that is going on in Vidhana Soudha of Karnataka for the past two and half years. There are direct references of Yaddyurappa's helpless situation, Reddy brothers' selling of Indian natural resources to foreign country and their horsetrading. Besides this, Upendra even scolds the common man of this state, who is sitting silently and watching their play.

Although the movie gives a beautiful message to the audience, it does not deal with boring moral story. The director has spiced up the complex story with wonderful commercial elements. It has good story with a brilliant concept. It has very dynamic pace of narration and the director has got good grip over it. Audience do not understand how the first half gets over. The director has maintained twists at every step, which develop the curiosity in audience and make sit tighly till the end of the movie. The climax of the film is superb.

Subash Chandra Gandhi (Upendra) is an NRI, who owns a multi-billion pounds software company in London. He is a big patriot, who loves India despite being in London. His love for India makes him fall to a girl called Indra (Nayanthara), who acts like a tradition Indian girl. But her revenge mission makes him realise the dirty political system of India. How he changes the bad condition of Karnataka, which has not been changed for the past 60 years, will form the climax of the story.

As usual, Upendra rocks the show with fluent dialogue delivery and aggressive behavior on screen. Nayantara has played a decent role for which she has done justice. Tulip Joshi has very less scope and she has lived up to it. Sadhu Kokila and Ali's comedy timing is also good. Others like Rockline Venkatesh, Jeeva, Nagendra Shah and Sudarshan have done justice to their roles.

V Harikrishna's music is another highlight of the movie Super. There are six songs and all of them are rocking. Especially, tracks like 'Kayi Kayi Uppinakayi...', 'Come on Come on Director..'. and 'Sikkapatte Ishtapate...' have already become chart-busters. Ashok Kashyap and Johny Lal have beautifully captured locations in London. They have delivered wonderful work in shooting of all the songs too. Uppi's punch dialogues (I love India and Indra), choreography of songs and fights are also brilliant.

Despite having all these plus points, the movie has some weaknesses. But the wonderful story and fast paced narration make the viewers does not brood over them. Overall, Super is a wonderful movie, which every responsible citizen of Karnataka must watch.
