Devru – Review

Devru
Musician-turned-comedian Sadhu Kokila, who has earlier directed hit Kannada movie like Suntargali, is now back with his next directorial venture Devru. This time, he has done nothing but added another movie to the list of remake and rowdyism movies. Producer Rockline Venkatesh has claimed Devru as a remake of Mohanlal"s Malayalam film Abhimanyu, but it is clear that the movie owes a lot to Tamil version Thalai Nagaram.

Although director Sadhu Kokila has been very honest to the Tamil version, he has put lot of brain and labour in making it look different from the original. He has recreated all commercial elements like action, revenge, sentiment, comedy and glamour songs according to the taste of Kannada audience. But it seems that all his elements have failed to lure audiences and let Duniya Vijay become the showman of the movie Devru once again after the movies like Taakat and Junglee.

The movie Devru revolves around the life of underworld dons and rowdies and their relationship with politicians and policemen. The first half of the movie is interesting with some credible sequences. Although the second half is a little boring, the climax makes the audiences tighten their seat belts.

Devru (Vijay), who is the leader of a group of henchmen, is trying to lead a reformed life. But unknowingly, he becomes a puppet in the hands of underworld don Rami Reddy (Ravi Kale) and Bandi (Shobhraj). He fights with Rami Reddy after his supporters kill his friend Nandi. Police officer Venkatesh (Rockline Venkatesh) gives him a chance to reform. What happens next will form the rest of the story.

Duniya Vijay, who has tonsured his head for the movie, has appeared in a totally different get up. As usual, he rocks the audiences with his brilliant performance in fight sequences. Pragna (Prajna) sizzles and shows her glamour in songs. Sadhu Kokila"s comedy sequences with Om Prakash Rao are another highlight. Ravi Kale, Ashish Vidyarthi, Shobhraj and PN Sathya have also filled life to their roles.

Besides acting and directing the movie Devru, Sadhu Kokila has also scored music for it. He has managed to bring newness in the music in order to make it a commercially hit. But hardly any song haunts the audiences.

Although the movie Devru is a clear copy of Tamil movie, it has plenty of entertaining elements. Vijay"s performance might lead the movie to run for 100 days.
