Will Smith says divorce from first wife was painful

London (ANI): American actor Will Smith has revealed that the “most painful loss" he ever endured in his life was his divorce from first wife. Smith, 41, had married girlfriend Sheree Zampino in 1992, and they both became proud parents of son, Trey, before they decided to end their relationship in 1995.

The actor now insists that he has learned the ups and downs of married life since tying the knot with actress Jada Pinkett Smith, and admits that he could have saved his first marriage had he tried harder.

“That (first marriage) is probably the most painful loss of my life. I quit. I could have fixed it. It really was not that bad," the Daily Express quoted him as saying. “With Jada, I stood up in front of God and my family and friends and said, 'Till death do us part." So there are two possible outcomes: we are going to be together till death or I am dead.

“Jada and I have problems; everybody has problems. People ask, 'What happens if you made a mistake?" Well, you should be a little more careful before you stand up in front of God and your family and friends and say, 'Till death do us part"," he added.

Divorce is always painful, no matter what. Marriage is a committment to another person and, today, with quickie divorces, nobody seems to understand that word 'committment'. Marriage is not easy and it has it's ups and its downs. A firm foundation in friendship is what gets you through the hard times together. If you aren't friends with each other, you have no foundation to get you through those hard times. I've been married 34 years, we've seen good times and bad and are still together.

Every marriage has it's ups and downs. If a couple decide to separate, it does not necessarily mean that they are divorcing. Sometimes that separation is needed to put things back into perspective and often the couple finds they'd rather stay together than live without each other. If this is true, that the Smith's have separated, I feel it will be brief and that they will be back together soon.

Divorce can be extremely traumatic to families, especially children. This book takes us through a myriad of emotions that two children, Stephen and Alex experience through this tumultuous period. The children, especially Alex gives an extremely candid and honest account of the day to day trauma, the hostility and at times the many poignant memories that he has. Living with Mom, Spending Time with Dad also addresses the concerns and anguish of being torn between two parents. Throughout the story there is that underlying hope that everything will turn out alright and everyone will be back in their original comfort zone.
