Sameer Dattani Biography
Sameer Dattani or Sammir Dattani (Kannada: ಸಮೀರ್ ದತಾನೀ) also known as Dhyan(Kannada: ಧ್ಯಾನ್)(in Kannada film industry) is an Indian film actor who acted in Bollywood and Kannada films.
Sammir belongs to a Gujarati business family and was born and brought up in Mumbai. He did his schooling at Greenlawns and graduated from H.R college. Before turning to acting, Sammir was a national level roller skater and has won many awards at the all India level.
Sammir has been facing the camera since the age of 17. He was a popular face on many TV commercials and music videos. 'Valentine's Day' a popular music video made him an instant teen heart-throb. Sammir Dattani started his Hindi film career with one of the biggest banners in Bollywood, Rajshri Films.
However, the film 'Uuf Kya Jaadoo Mohabbat Hai' did not do well at the box-office but the audiences and critics, did notice and appreciat his work. Although his roles in Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Corporate' and Vikram Bhatt's 'Life Mein Kabhie Kabhie' were small, his acting skills were applauded by many. Most of his films in the Kannada film industry have been big hits. A few have also been dubbed in Telugu and become hits there as well. In fact, his career in films began with the Kannada film, 'Nanna Preethiya Hudugi'.
The film celebrated its silver jubliee at the box office and also fetched him the best debutant award in the South. A famous song from the film 'car car' became a huge hit with the audience and continues to be a popular number. Another Kannada film of his 'Amruthadhare' also made waves at the box office. It ran successfully for 25 weeks across cinema halls in Karnataka. The film even had the Big B, Amitabh Bachchan make a special appearance, his only appearance in a South Indian film so far. Now besides consolidating his career in Bollywood, he still continues to do films down South, where his screen name is 'Dhyan'
In the Hindi film 'Mukhbir' Sammir played an under cover police informer, which earned him a lot of appreciation from critics as well as the audience. The film was directed by Mani Shankar and starred senior actors like Om Puri, Suniel Shetty, Jackie Shroff and Tabu. The film fared well the box office and also won many accolades across film festivals.
Sammir is now working on his first ever Tamil film, being produced by Gemini Films. Titled 'Kutty' he is acting oppossite Shreya Saran. He is rumoured to be making a foray into other South Indian languages as well.
Noticing the young actor's potential, renowned film director Shyam Benagal is casting him in his upcoming film 'Well done Abba'. Boman Irani and Minisha Lamba also star in this one. Shooting for the same is completed and the film is expected to release end 2009.
The actor hails from a business family, which is into textiles. And Sammir is also the proud owner of a Chinese restaurant in Kala Ghoda, Mumbai.
