Mammootty Biography

Mammootty is an Indian film actor and the producer (malayalam) born on 7 September 1953. His original name is Muhammad Kutty.He has also acted in a few Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada movies. He was born and raised in Chempu near Vaikom in the Kottayam district of the state of Kerala, India in a middle class Muslim family, to Ismail who was an agriculturist and his mother Fatima who was a housewife.He did his high school (pre-degree) at Maharajas College, Kochi, and then studied law at Ernakulam Government Law College. He also practiced law for two years in Manjeri. He married Sulfath in 1980 and has a daughter, Surumi and a son, Dulquar Salman

Career

Vilkanundu Swapnangal was Mammootty's first released film. His roles in Mela,Sphodanam and Thrishna, got him noticed as a hero.In 1982, he made a trend in the role of a police officer in the movie Yavanika. He got his first state award in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance in Ahimsa in 1981. In the mid 1980's he appeared Koodevide and Aa Raathri. His performances in films like Aalkkoottathil Thaniye and Adiyozhukkukal were get noticed.

His role in Adiyozhukkukal, earned him a State Award and a Filmfare Award in the Best Actor category. Mammootty won the State special jury award and Best Actor Filmfare Award for the movie Yathra. Other movies of the mid-80s included  Sandharbham, Nirakkoottu and Athirathram. In 1986, he had big hits such as Avanazhi and Poovinnu Puthiya Poonthennal. In 1987 he made a comeback again with movies such as New Delhi and Thaniyavarthanam.

In 1988 Mammootty appeared in Oru CBI Diary Kurippu which was followed by three more murder mystery sequels. Jagratha,Sethurama Iyer CBI and Nerariyan CBI  are those three. He also acted in M. T. Vasudevan Nair’s films such as Aksharangal, Sukrutham, and Keralavarma Pazhassiraja. He also had some big hits such as Abkari, 1921 and August 1. In 1987, he also acted in Anantharam which won the National Film Award for Best Director.

Sreedharante Onnam Thirumurivu and Manu Uncle were the attempts made by him in comedy roles.Mammootty appeared in the film Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, for which he won the National Film Award for Best Actor. Mammootty's performance in Mathilukal was also considered for the award. His role as a hunter Varunni in Mrugaya, and another film Mahayanam were also considered for the state award. Mammootty got some hits in the early 90's such as Kottayam Kunjachan, Amaram, Inspector Balram which is a sequel to Avanazhi and Pappayude Swantham Appoos.

He won the Filmfare Award for his performance in Amaram and also received his second national award for his performances in Vidheyan and Ponthan Mada. He also received state award for his roles in both films. His performance in Valtsalyam directed by Cochin Haneefa was also considered for the State award. In mid-1990s he acted in some hits such as Mazhayethum Munpe and Azhakiya Ravanan, No.1 Snehatheeram Banglore North, Hitler and The King.In 1997, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the movie Bhoothakannadi.

In 1999, Mammootty won his third national award for Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar,which is an English language movie.By the end of 1990's he had films such as Megham and Harikrishnans. In the early 2000s, Mammootty had films such as Valliettan,but after this movie, he had a declining career. He won Filmfare Best Actor Award for the movie Arayannagalude Veedu directed by Lohithadas.

Mammootty acted in films such as Chronic Bachelor, Sethurama Iyer CBI and  Kazhcha. In 2004, he won the state award for his performance in Kazhcha. The year 2005 Thommanum Makkalum and Rajamanikyam became the block busters in which Rajamanikyam went on to become the biggest hit of Malayalam cinema at that time. Other movies in the mid-2000s include Thuruppu Gulan, Mayavi, Big B, Annan Thambi and Loudspeaker. In 2006, Mammootty won the Filmfare Best Actor Award for the movie Karutha Pakshikal. He also won the Filmfare Legendary Actor Award in 2007. In October 2009, Pazhassi Raja was released and it was said to be the highest grossing film in the history of Malayalam cinema. In 2009, he won his fifth state award for Best Actor for his performance in Paleri Manikyam.

Mammootty was again nominated for the National Award for Best Actor in 2009, but got rejected eventually.Mammootty started of the decade with Pokkiri Raja, which became one of the biggest hits ever in the Malayalam film industry. Pranchiyettan and the Saint, directed by Ranjith, has became a superhit at the box office. It has now become a film with the longest theatrical run in the past five years. His latest release is Best Actor, has also performed well at the box-office.His next release is Shaji Kailas's August 15 and currently he is working with Jayaraj for the movie The Train.

Mammootty has acted in some Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and English films. In 1989, he made his Tamil debut in Maunam Sammatham, He has acted in Tamil films such as Azhagan, Thalapathy, Kandukondain Kandukondain and Kilippechu Kekkavaa. In 1992 he played the role of Anantha Sharma in a Telugu film Swathi Kiranam.He also acted in the Kannada film Love in 2005.

He made his debut into Hindi films through Thriyathri which was released in 1989, and his first film as a hero was Dhartiputra. He starred in the biographical film Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar directed by Jabbar Patel which was in the English language. He also appeared in Sau Jhooth Ek Sach. During the 2006 IIFA Awards ceremony held at Dubai, he openly criticized the organizers of the IIFA Awards for completely ignoring South Indian film by stating that the Bollywood film industry should stand up to competition from the South Indian film industry before calling itself international.
