In Gunday, Director Ali Abbas Zafar has made a tremendous improvement in terms of his directorial prowess when compared to his earlier film. His sincere attempt to recreate the charm of 70s is successful but the film fails to impress the audience who expected a solid plot from the film.
When compared to the trailer which was really promising, the movie didn't match up the spirit it reflected. But still Gunday is a great improvement for the director who did Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. The characters are the stereotypes from the 70s Bollywood which always showcased angst ridden youth. The attempt was that to cash in on that nostalgia and popularity. The ambience of the film may remind you of Yash Chopra's Amitabh Bachchan film Kaala Patthar and a bit of Gangs Of Wasseypur.
The film's screenplay is not fresh and is marred with plot holes so big that Chuck Norris can drive his transformer-like trucks through it. The story of the film doesn't move or introduce fresh situations in the second half to make the audience engaged in it. Saving grace of Gunday is its sound track that has many songs belong to various genres. You have a qawwali, dub step style title track, cabaret number, a soulful track in the form of Jiya, a street number in this one album. Actors has delivered a very energetic performances in songs,. Especially in Tune Maari Entriyaan.
The characters of Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, are from the streets but both of them appear in carefully chiseled 6 pack abs because that is a necessity for Yash Raj audience. Director is not honest to the subject but designed the film for a typical Yash Raj audience. But the black coal mafia and the glam factor of the YRF films don't blend together finely.

Great Promise in Trailer But No Honesty In Film
Director is not honest to the subject but designed the film for a typical Yash Raj audience.
A Pinch of Anurag Kashyap And A Pinch Of Yash Chopra
The black coal mafia and the glam factor of the YRF films don't blend together finely.
