Dabangg 2 – Critics review

NDTV - 2.5 stars
As you watch Dabangg 2, crammed as it is with an entire panoply of crowd-pleasing tropes, you see no reason to doubt its money-spinning potential. The folksy songs, robustly choreographed and lustily performed, add to the film's LCD (lowest common denominator) appeal.

Dabangg 2 also objectifies women in the worst way possible. Watch the Kareena Kapoor song 'Fevicol' and you will know what I mean. She gyrates, sighs, pouts, refers to herself as a tandoor, while men are gaping at her in the lewdest fashion.

Times of India - 3.5 stars
Dabangg 2 presents a sewaiyyan Western where hot-cop Chulbul is cowboy and stud. If you're up for fun that's purely tongue-in-cheek, this will give you bangs for your buck. Arbaaz Khan's direction is commendable - he maximises his main star, maintains balance and keeps the movie tight.

Bollywood Hungama - 4 stars
Dabangg 2 is a typical Bollywood film. It's the kind of cinema we relished in the 1980s and enjoy to this date, but narrated in today's lingo and format. It may/may not make sense to you, but Arbaaz and team ensure that you are entertained. Thoroughly entertained, actually. It's riotous, outrageous, wacky, ambitious, absolutely madcap, transports you to an altogether different world.

Rediff - 2.5 stars
Dabangg 2 serves primarily as a reminder of what this Rs 100 crore addiction is doing to the art of entertainment. Entertainment, not filmmaking, mind you. Even escapism deserves to be treated with boundless imagination. And so I'll take Salman Khan stopping a moving tram with nothing but a blazer over the same old Matrix-era maneuvers. Now THAT was quite a kamaal, Pandeyji.

The problem with Dabangg 2 is the same that plagues most sequels; unless there is an essentially original plot and an unpredictable twist, there is nothing new in this story. The gags, the stunts, the catch phrases, even the song placement at regular intervals give the film a very repetitive feel.

IBN - 2.5 stars
Dabangg 2 feels like a pale imitation of Dabangg. Between the dozen-odd action scenes filmed in slo-mo to suggest the impact of every punch, and the obligatory bosom-heaving item song, you've seen it all before. Clever punch lines are few and far between, and even Sajid-Wajid's music has a recycled quality to it.

Mid Day - 3 Stars
High on dialogue and drama but low, low, low on plot. Sticking strictly to a frame by frame template of its earlier instalment, Dabangg 2 turns out to be more of an episodic telling of the life and exploits of its protagonist Chulbul Pandey. However, apna Salman returns in top form and cheer and really, that's what will delight diehard fans.

India Today - 3 Stars
If Dabangg 2 was always about Salman Khan revelling in top form, the superstar doesn't disappoint. He makes Chulbul Pandey even more lovable this time - cool shades, wry humour, crackling stunts and smooth chemistry with the pretty Sonakshi, all very much in place. Did you seriously need any more reasons to watch?
