The condition of iconic Bengali actress Suchitra Sen, undergoing treatment in a private nursing home in Kolkatta following a chest infection, deteriorated late Sunday night, and she was transferred to the Critical Care Unit (CCU).

"Her heartbeat has become high. The two lungs are congested. We are trying to reduce the heartbeat," the nursing home sources said here. Suchitra Sen, 83, was admitted to the nursing home Tuesday after she complained of breathlessness. However, the sources said, till now there was no cause of anxiety.

Suchitra Sen In Critical Condition

Though Suchitra has mostly acted in Bengali films, her roles in a few Hindi films have been greatly appreciated. Suchitra Sen made her Bollywood debut with the film Devdas (1955) and then went on to do a few Hindi films which include Musafir (1957), Champakali (1957), Bombai Ka Baboo (1960), Mamta (1966) and Aandhi (1975). Her brilliant acting in Aandhi helped her to be nominated for the best Filmfare actress.

Suchitra Sen was born into a simple family. Her father Karunamoy Dasgupta was a teacher in a local school and her mother Indira Devi was a homemaker. Suchitra Sen's foray into Bengali films came after she married Dibanath Sen, son of a wealthy Bengali industrialist. Her only daughter Moon Moon Sen was also an actress.
