Critics play a vital role in determining the fate of a film – at least to ensure a good opening. Many read film reviews and check rating before heading for the theatres. So, this piece of news would worry the makers of Patiala House. But why? Because it has got mixed reviews - from good reviews to not so good reviews to bad reviews. Different critics have given different verdict for the film.
Popular critic Taran Adarsh is all praise for the film and describes it as a 'pleasant surprise'. “Patiala House is a film about attachments, affiliations and familial bonding. It's a compelling watch, more for its drama and histrionics than anything else. It's a film that explores the father-son relationship and not just those in India, but around the world should be able to relate to the predicament depicted in this film," he wrote. “Patiala House is an underdog. The expectations are zilch, the odds are not in its favour, but the film throws a pleasant surprise. Go for it!" he recommended.
However, Sonia Chopra is of the opinion that Patiala House is just an average film with nothing new to offer. “Director Nikhil Advani makes a cocktail of elements that have known to work with the Indian viewers: there"s the A-list actors, a shaadi, fast-paced songs, drama and of course, cricket," she wrote. “It's a decent cocktail, but how many times are viewers expected to order the same thing?" she asked.
Anupama Chopra thinks that it is a good film but not a film that could make it very big. "Patiala House is the best work director Nikhil Advani and Akshay Kumar have done recently. It is an old-fashioned Hindi movie with big drama, solid dialogue-baazi and moments that are genuinely moving and rousing," she wrote. “Patiala House never soars but it is a notch better than the mediocre fare that we see every week. If you have patience and not much else going on, check it out," she added.
Well, Patiala House is a family drama with Akshay Kumar playing a Sikh being trapped in the patriarchal family system. It features Anushka Sharma in the female lead role. Bhushan Kumar, Mukesh Talreja, Krishan Kumar and Twinkle Khanna co-produce the film and Nikhil Advani directs it.
