Shanghai gets rave reviews from film critics
Director Dibakar Banerjee's latest Hindi movie Shanghai starring Emraan Hashmi, Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin and Prosenjit Chatterjee in the leads, has received rave reviews from almost all the film critics. Lead actors' performances and Dibakar's script and direction are the major highlights of the film, which has been rated 4 out of 5. Continue to read film critics' verdict.

Glamsham - Martin D'Souza's Rating: 4.5
Banerjee's passion for film-making is now a given. Like Tigmanshu Dhulia, he has defined his own brand of cinema, one that will find its own audience. Shanghai is for the discerning viewers.

DNA - Aniruddha Guha's Rating: 4.5
To sum, Dibakar Banerjee's Shanghai walks the thin line between mainstream and meaningful cinema, and does so beautifully. The rare, well-deserving Rs 100 cr film? Who cares! There's more to cinema than Box Office records and opening weekend numbers; Shanghai is the perfect example. Watch.

Koimoi - Mrigank Dhaniwala's Rating: 4.5
What's Good is its engaging script, superlative performances, direction. What's Bad is the screenplay is of the kind which might not appeal to the lay viewers. Shanghai is a classy, entertaining fare.

Rediff - Raja Sen's Rating: 4
Z was named after an iconic one-letter cry of Greek protest, but Shanghai is all Dibakar, who we must lift on our shoulders with grateful pride. And we must exult in the fact that this D is never silent.

NDTV - Saibal Chatterjee's Rating: 4
Shanghai draws much of its strength from a taut screenplay that never overplays its hand and leaves a lot to the imagination of the audience. It is an immeasurable pleasure to watch a Mumbai film that hinges as much on the unstated or barely suggested as it does on what is uttered and spelt out.

Bollywood Hungama - Taran Adarsh's Rating: 4
Shanghai is undeniably one of the most politically astute films ever made. It keeps you involved and concerned right from its inception to the harrowing culmination. This is not your usual Bollywood masala film, but a serious motion picture that has a voice, that makes you think, that makes a stunning impact. A must watch!

Oneindia - Nabanita's Rating: 4
Shanghai promises you a lot of social drama, ruthless and brutal politics and the realism of society that may change your insight towards many social aspects.

Times of India - Gaurav Malani's Rating: 3.5
On a candid note, Shanghai is a story that one has witnessed several times before in cinema. What makes it a decent watch then is Dibakar Banerjee's offbeat take on the subject and impeccable understanding of the milieu.

Daily Baskar - Mayank Shekhar's Rating: 3.5
Between artistry and analysis, Dibakar Bannerjee, one of the most exciting filmmakers around, chooses to entertain first. He doesn't shy away from slipping in an "item number" either. This is what separates his deeply observant, highly visual cinema (Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, LSD, or this one), from socially conscious art-house movement of the 80s.
