Farmers demand ban of Peepli Live

Any Aamir Khan film always comes with its share of controversies. While during the release of Fanaa, it was Aamir's comments on the Narmada controversy which led to the film being banned in Gujarat. During Rang De Basanti, some animal rights activists had protested against certain portions of the title song while during Taare Zameen Par, his comments on Amitabh Bachchan starrer Black led to a cold war between the duo. More recently during 3 Idiots, the whole Chetan Bhagat controversy, over who should claim credit for the story, came to the forefront. Now even Aamir's latest home production Peepli Live is in the storm of a few controversies.

Like we had earlier reported, a few farmers' families in Vidarbha have been demanding a ban on the film for not depicting the farmers' plight in a correct way. Besides this, a hand pump being referred to as Lal Bahadur (an obvious reference to our late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri) has also not gone down well with two advisory panel members of the CBFC taking objection. In addition to these, some members of the media have not liked the way their fraternity has been portrayed in the film.

While the film continues its dream run at the Box Office despite these controversies, we would like to know from you - the janta janardhan - if the film has indeed not depicted the plight of farmers in rural India in the correct way and deserves to be banned? Or does the film rightly depict the real situation of rural India?

A few outdoor shoots and indoor ones (in the Hotel Woodville Palace) were.....

Ban or no-ban is not the question --it's a free cpuntry -- let thousand flowers bloom!! Questions are two: 1] Why an astronomical sum of ten crores be spent for making a film on rag-pickers?? where did all this money go? And why boast twenty five crores profit through a ferocious marketing michinations? [ Of course, it's peanuts compared to 85 crores spent on 3 Idiots and drop dead 400 crores in return!!] 2] what was the great point in making a show of "showing" Peepli to none else but the...

I cant see a reason why this film should be banned even if it is portraying the truth about the adversities our farmers are facing. According to me these type of films should be encouraged so as to bring the poor peoples problem in the forefront rather than making all masaledar bakvas films. besides, Aamir khans films have always been something related to the current issues and problems faced by the people. similar to peepli live, 3 idiots is portraying the plight of the engineering students...
