After composing hardcore massy and successful tunes for films like Salaam E Ishq, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Heyy Babyy and Johnny Gaddaar musical trio of Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy would be ending an eventful 2007 with Taare Zameen Par.

Already being hailed as a soundtrack that stays true to the film's spirit and promises to thoroughly involve a viewer while the music is on during the film's narrative, Taare Zameen Par has brought to fore a different side of the composers.

Reflects Shankar Mahadevan, "It was a challenge for us to get the right sound in place. The focus was concentrated on sticking to the film's spirit while composing tunes. We couldn't camouflage or compromise on the sound with arrangements or spicing up the affairs with any 'jhinchaak' stuff."

"It is easier when you have to create a song like 'Move Your Body' in Johnny Gaddaar. There you can add a lot of nonsense in the recording studio. On the other hand, something like Taare Zameen Par requires melody to hold center stage. There is a different level of energy that you have to bring in composing for such different soundtrack as we had to be subdued yet effective in Taare Zameen Par."
Talking of holding center stage, it also seems that Shankar has acted selfish by giving himself two of the best numbers in the album to croon. "No, it was never planned that way", laughs Shankar, "It was actually Aamir Khan who wanted me to sing for the title song Taare Zameen Par and also Maa. He felt that my voice suited the soulful feel of the tracks and once he heard me hum it, he pushed me to record the final version myself."

How about Kiran Rao, Aamir Khan's wife, making her debut as a singer? Apparently she features in the track 'Bheja Kum'. "Don't read too much into this", he smiles, "'Bheja Kum' is dialogue based rather than being a conventional song. The song not just features Kiran, who basically says a line or two, but also nine other singers/artists, which include Aamir Khan himself. In a lighter vein, they all just speak a few words to showcase the kind of tension that a kid goes through! We had a blast while creating this track as it is has a very funny yet realistic side to it."

Talking further about the response that Taare Zameen Par has got amongst the connoisseurs of quality music, Shankar says, "Taare Zameen Par is very close to our hearts. We were so moved when we were given the narration of the film. We knew instantly that we had to come up with a kind of score that gels well with the theme and spirit of the film. I am happy that the music has caught on with audience acknowledging this aspect of the soundtrack."
