Even before its release, the film earned Rs 16 crores from its satellite and music rights. The director says that it had to recover only Rs 4.75 crore from theatrical release to be profitable.
Shanghai, which released in theatres worldwide on June 8, opened to a very poor response at the Box Office on Friday. The film collected Rs 3.35 crores nett on the first day of its release. Its business improved by more than 20% with the movie raking in Rs 4.25 crores on Saturday and Rs 4.5 crores on Sunday. It has earned a total of Rs 12.10 crores nett from its threatrical release in the first weekend.
However, Dibakar Banerjee, who is one of the producers of film Shanghai, seems to be very happy with its performance at the Box Office. But the trade analysts say that its collection is not up to the mark. The movie features big stars and it has had massive promotion activities. Moreover, several film critics opined that it is a good entertainer with a wonderful message.
Despite having all these plus points, what made Shanghai go down at the Box Office? Well! Trade analysts say that it is Rowdy Rathore's effect. The movie, which has scored Rs 101 crores nett in 10 days, remained the first choice of the film goers in the second weekend, which seems to have affected the collections of Shanghai.
