Late filmmaker Yash Chopra's last directorial venture Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ) has topped the business chart at the Box Office in India in the first week. But the movie has just failed to cross Rs 100 crore mark at the domestic collection centres in the 10-day-extended opening week. It would be the second fastest 100 crore grossers movie in the history of Indian cinema with Ek Tha Tiger being in the top place.
Jab Tak Hai Jaan, which released in 2,500+ screens on November 13, was to hit more number of theatres, but the makers of the movie could not get more screens due to the release of Ajay Devgn's Son Of Sardar, which hit 2,000+screens across the country on the same date. This was a big setback for Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma starrer much-hyped movie, which was expected to break the record of YRF's last release Ek Tha Tiger.
Despite having tough competition from Son Of Sardar, Jab Tak Hai Jaan received a fantastic response with its occupancy ranging between 90% to 100%. This romantic thriller had very good footfalls in multiplexes across the country when compared to its response in single screens. It collected Rs 15.23 crores at the domestic Box Office on the first day. It witnessed a big jump in its business on the second day.
But the collection of Jab Tak Hai Jaan went down due to busy working days for offices and colleges on Thursday and Friday. The movie was expected to show big leap over the weekend. But the death of Bal Thackeray took a toll on its collection. It collected Rs 80.73 crores nett at the domestic Box Office in the six-day-extended first weekend. Its breakup is Rs 15.23 cr on Tue, Rs 19.54 cr on Wed, Rs 14.45 cr on Thu, Rs 11.17 cr on Fri, Rs 10.38 cr on Sat and Rs 9.96 cr on Sun.
The business of Jab Tak Hai Jaan dipped further by 50% on Monday. The movie continued to show decrease in the collection on the remaining days of the week. The Shahrukh-Katrina-Anushka has added Rs 18.14 crores to 10-day-extended first week total Rs 98.87 crores nett at the domestic Box Office. Its weekdays' breakup is Rs 5.36 cr on Mon, Rs 4.66 cr on Tue, Rs 4.12 cr on Wed and Rs 4 cr on Thu.
However, Jab Tak Hai Jaan was expected to beat the records of Ek Tha Tiger at the Indian Box Office. Despite having massive promotions and positive talks. The movie has failed to do so. One reason is that Jab Tak Hai Jaan was released in less number of screens when compared to Ek Tha Tiger, which had hit 3,500 screens in India. Another reason is that the film goers were got divided between Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardar.
