Utpalendu Chowdhury passes away

Kolkata, Feb 8 (PTI) Eminent folk singer Utpalendu Chowdhury, who followed the inimitable music style of his celebrated father late Nirmalendu Chowdhury in spreading the and popularising the spirit of Bengal's traditional folk songs abroad, died at a hospital here of pneumonia.

His family said that the artiste, who was 62, had been recuperating from cancer, but was recently attacked with pneumonia and succumbed at a hospital this morning. Utpalendu took upon himself the cudgel of preserving and spreading Bengal's rich treasure of traditional folk song in the country as well as abroad where he travelled with his troupe.

After the death of Nirmalendu, considered the pioneer of Bengal's 'Lok sangeet'(folk song), Utpalendu took pains to preserve his father's rich contribution to popularise the type of Bengali music.

I am as shocked and saddened as I am sure everyone else feels by this tragic loss. No doubt death is all around us, waiting for the very next one on the list. However, Utpalendu came across as so young, with so much to give (I would not imagine he had crossed 60, given his vigor and energy). I was personally first drawn to Bangla music in a public forum in this country (the U.S.) when I listened to Utpalendu sing on stage at the Banga Sammelan in Lowell, Mass., in I believe 1989. The...
