Bengali actor and director Dilip Roy dies of cancer

Popular Bengali actor-turned-director Dilip Roy died at a private hospital in Kolkatta on Thursday. He was suffering form cancer for long time. The 79-year-old star, who is known for his characters in films like Hanshulibaker Upokatha and Khudita Pashan, was a bachelor and is survived by three adopted sons.

Dilip Roy was born in Chittagong and studied in Asansol. The Tollywood star started his acting career with the Bengali film Sati Behula in 1954, but his first break came form the film Parivar. Then on, there was no looking back in his career. He acted in 44 films and with his commendable performances and a great variety of roles, he entertained the audience for five decades. He also acted in a few TV serials and telefilms.

As a character artiste, Dilip Roy had acted alongside veteran Bengali actors like Uttam Kumar, Soumitra Chatterjee, Suchitra Sen, Anil Chatterjee and Chhabi Biswas. Movies like Sorry Madam, Nivedita, Shiuli Bari, Chorus, Raajdrohi, Mahabiplabi and Neelkantha established him as a character actor.

After tasting success as actor, Dilip Roy took to direction and he directed Soumitra Chatterjee and Uttam Kumar in his first directorial venture Debdas in 1979 and it was a big hit movie. Later, he did a few of successful movies like Neelkantha, Darpachurna and Amrita Kumbher Sandhaney.

Besides being an actor and director, Dilip Roy was a cinematographer too. He wielded camera for Bengali movie Bhalobasa Bhalobasa, Oriya films like Tu Eka Aama Saha Bharasa, Mamata Ra Dori, and Chaka Bhaunri. Now, Dilip Roy's death has created a vaccum in Tollywood, which can not be replaced.

Would request to do a proper research before posting the pictures, this is legendary soumitro chatterjee's photograph, and he is very much alive..
