All her admirers, from her fans to her students rushed to her residence to pay their last visit to her with full of tears and shock. Her last journey will start today morning. She will first be taken to the Rabindra Bharati University, where she was a professor for long and later her body will be kept at Rabindra Sadan for public tributes. Her last rites will be performed at the Keoratala crematorium in the afternoon.

Suchitra, born in 1924, entertained the music lovers with her sweet version of Tagore songs for six decades. Though Suchitra had not performed in public for several years due to failing health, she had not lost her popularity among the music lovers. Her recordings and CDs still continue to dominate the popularity ratings.

Suchitra, informed one of the close friend in the family, described her life as “extremely well lived." However, the veteran died with one regret buried in her heart, she had a wish to meet her master Rabindranath Tagore. But, to her bad luck, she joined Visva Bharati as a scholarship student exactly 20 days after Tagore's demise. Suchitra grieved about the loss her entire life.

She made her first recording with songs like 'Hridayer Ekul Okul Dukul Bheshe Jae' and 'Maran Re Tuhu Mama Shyam Shaman' in 1945 with HMV. She is well know for her popular Tagore songs like "Gramchara oi Ranga Matir Path", "Krishnakai", "Hridayer ekul okul du kul bheshe jai". Mitra received the Padma Shri in 1973.

We at oneindia pay tribute to this legendary lady. May her soul rest in peace.
